Our May production is the tongue in cheek classic “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”, a witty, satirical look at life in the 1960’s: – big business, gender roles and corporate conformity. First produced in 1961, critics described it as “crafty, conniving, sneaky, cynical, irreverent, impertinent, sly, malicious, and lovely”! (Walter Kerr, New York Herald Tribune)
Based on the 1952 best selling satirical novel of the same name, the show follows the ambitious machinations of protagonist J Pierrepont Finch as he nimbly trips his way up the corporate ladder to transform himself from window washer to Chairman of the Board, embracing manipulation, self promotion and misogyny along the way! In the changed and uncertain world in which we live, the moral and ethical concerns of the 1960s still echo disturbingly in our psyches but there’s plenty to laugh at in this show, as well as clever tunes by Frank Loesser of ‘Guys and Dolls’ fame. We’re excited.
If that kind of light hearted social commentary is not your thing…how about Sunset Boulevard?? Dramatic and passionate with music by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, it traces the descent of disenchanted young screenwriter Joe Gillies as he is drawn into the life of fading sliver screen star Norma Desmond. Based on the 1950 film-noir, it is a sweeping and heart wrenching exploration of humanity.
