It’s been all go in the rehearsal rooms these last few weeks. As dress rehearsals approach and sitzprobe and bump-in loom, the young people crafting this production are totally immersed in the experience.

It has to be said that ‘West Side Story’ is an emotional ride. It’s not the light-hearted, tap loaded, happily ever after of some of your usual Broadway fare. Its themes of difference, prejudice and belonging are at times tough to watch and of course, confronting to portray. Watching these young people working through all this is both breathtaking and inspiring. Interspersed of course with the usual moments of total silliness that are all part of the joy of a musical theatre experience.

There’s definitely camaraderie although perhaps not along the Jets and Sharks divide.

These angst filled young men can often been seen hanging out together at the Bakery after rehearsals with zero violence recorded! In fact they’re so personable that some of them have been visiting local radio stations to hang out with Breakfast Radio personalities – and equally ‘young at heart’ older cast members! It’s not all Gen Alpha and Zoomers in this cast 🙂
Paul Davies from Radio Adelaide’s ‘Big Little Breakfast Show’ recently hosted (L-R) Matty Turner who plays ‘Action’ and Russell Ford who plays Doc . Thanks Paul!

We can’t wait to see all this energy and emotion onstage at The Arts Theatre, or should I say on the streets of New York’s upper west side, in two weeks time.
